What is your profession?
I’m retired now, so I dare say I’m a house husband! I started my professional life as a lieutenant in the artillery, spending four years helping to win the Cold War (😊). Later, I joined the police and became an assistant commissioner, but for over 30 years, I worked in reinsurance and trade credit insurance. I started as an underwriter and ended my career as a managing director. Throughout that time, I travelled around the world and even worked in unexpected places like Mauritius.
How did you become a tour guide?
I first attended a couple of OHP Festivals as a visitor with my Czech family, and I found them fascinating. Since retirement gives me some free time, I applied to become a volunteer. One thing led to another, and I eventually started guiding year-round—strongly encouraged by OHP’s star guide, Michal!
Which building/part of Prague or architectural style is your favorite?
I have a preference for Art Nouveau—after all, Belgium, where I come from, is where this architectural style first emerged. I love the Municipal House; having visited its interior, I can say it’s absolutely superb. But what I enjoy most in Prague is the sheer diversity of styles, from Renaissance to Brutalism—there’s just so much to admire!
How long have you been working with Open House Prague and what do you like about it?
The 2025 OHP Festival will be my third as a volunteer. I appreciate that OHP is a non-profit and apolitical organization, and I love its symbolism – opening buildings to the public in the hope of also opening minds, at least, that’s how I see it. I also enjoy the connection between architecture and history; to truly understand a place, you need to explore both.
What are your hobbies?
It’s a long list! My family comes first, followed by traveling (and the planning that comes with it). Our last trip was to New York, and the next one will be to Corsica. I’m also passionate about history and architecture, culture (cinema, music, photography, books), and trying to stay fit – 10,000 steps a day is my challenge – which competes with my liking for Belgian beer and chocolate!
